Students with special needs in Australian schools, as stated by Julie Watson (2010), are ‘generally unhappy at school and their educational needs consistently remain unmet’ which goes against many school’s philosophies of being ‘inclusive environments where all students can reach their potential’ (p. 35).
The aim of this website is to offer information about some different types of special needs present in Australian schools. This is of course only a snapshot of the available information and the behaviours and learning difficulties may not apply to all students who have these particular needs. The teaching strategies offered on this website are only suggestions, teaching strategies should be tailored to completely suit the individual learning needs each student.
Effective teachers should have a sound knowledge of the standards and curriculum that must be taught and have strategies that can be put in place to assist students with special needs in accessing the curriculum and obtaining a high quality education (DeRuvo, 2009, p. 28).
For the Future
The strategies suggested throughout this website may be introduced in the future to help ensure the education offered in Australian schools is inclusive and catered to the individual needs of all students. In order for teacher's to provide a quality education for all students in their classroom, including those with special needs, they must be aware of the special needs present in their classroom and how to be address these needs. Teachers should aim to become knowledgeable of appropriate teaching strategies which they can adopt to assist the students in their classroom.
